Minecraft Armor Trims - Locations, Recipes, and More

April 04, 2024

Minecraft 1.20 is finally here, and it’s bringing some seriously awesome armor customization. With the new Armor Trim smithing templates, you can deck out your armor with unique patterns and colors. Let’s dive into everything you need to know to make your armor look amazing.

This guide covers all the Armor Trims available in Minecraft, along with instructions on how to use them. We're basing this on Minecraft Snapshot 23w12a, so be aware that some details might change in the final release.

What Are Armor Trims in Minecraft?

Armor Trims are a new way to add a personal touch to your armor in Minecraft 1.20. These trims allow you to customize your armor’s appearance without affecting its stats. There are 16 different trims available, each of which can be applied in one of 10 colors, giving you a huge range of customization options.

When you combine all the color options, plus the different dyed leather armors, you end up with over a billion possible combinations. That’s right—over a billion ways to make sure your armor stands out from the crowd.

Where to Find Armor Trims in Minecraft

Armor Trims are found as smithing templates hidden in various structures across Minecraft's dimensions. Some are easier to find than others, but with a little effort, you’ll have your custom armor in no time.

  • Bolt Armor Trim - Trial Chamber
  • Flow Armor Trim - Trial Chamber

How to Apply Armor Trims

Choosing Your Colors

The Armor Trim smithing template determines the pattern on your armor, but you’ll need some material to color it. Here’s a list of materials you can use to add some flair to your armor:

  • Amethyst
  • Copper
  • Diamond
  • Emerald
  • Gold
  • Iron
  • Lapis
  • Netherite
  • Quartz
  • Redstone

Fun fact: You can even use the same material as your armor for the trim. For example, a gold trim on a gold chest plate will have a slightly darker gold shade, giving it a sleek, subtle look.

Using Armor Trims in the Smithing Table

Once you’ve got your Armor Trims and color material ready, here’s how to apply them to your armor:

  1. First, craft a Smithing Table by combining two iron ingots with four wooden planks.
  2. Next, open the Smithing Table and place the Armor Trim in the first slot.
  3. Then, put the piece of armor you want to customize in the middle slot.
  4. Finally, add your color material in the last slot. You’ll see a preview of your customized armor on the right.

Remember, you’ll need to trim each piece of armor individually, so make sure you’ve got enough trims for your full set. And once you’ve applied a trim, it’s permanent—no going back!
